In classrooms across the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, children face barriers to receiving a quality education. According to the UNESCO Institute of Statistics, in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, only 62% of primary school teachers meet the minimum qualifications to teach. Without trained, confident, and motivated educators, millions of children are being left behind not just academically, but in their ability to participate in lifelong learning and future economic growth.
While access to textbooks, technology, and infrastructure are all important, research continues to confirm that the single most influential factor in a child’s learning is the teacher. Professor John Hattie’s seminal work, Visible Learning, is based on a meta-analysis of over 800 studies involving millions of students worldwide. His findings reveal that teacher expertise and effectiveness have more than double the impact on student achievement compared to many other interventions. For instance, teacher-student relationships and feedback have far greater effect sizes than reducing class sizes or increasing school funding.
Hattie’s research underscores a powerful truth: it is not just schooling that matters it is the quality of teaching. Effective teachers don’t just deliver content; they create inclusive, supportive environments where learners can thrive. They adapt their approaches to meet students’ needs, inspire curiosity, and build resilience. In contexts where resources are scarce, a skilled teacher becomes even more critical, often compensating for a lack of materials through creativity and commitment.

Other global studies support these findings. The Education Commission’s 2016 report highlighted that investing in teacher professional development is among the most cost-effective ways to improve learning outcomes. Yet, in too many communities, teachers are under-supported, isolated, or have limited access to ongoing training.
This is where the Commonwealth Education Trust steps in. Our mission is grounded in the belief that every child deserves a quality education delivered by a transformative and supportive teacher. Through our digital platform, Teach2030, we provide accessible, affordable, and context-relevant professional development to teachers in low- and middle-income countries. By building teacher confidence and pedagogical skills, we help unlock better outcomes for students and communities alike.
When teachers are supported to grow, everyone benefits: students achieve more, schools become stronger, and communities have a greater chance at long-term economic and social development. Investing in teachers is not just an educational strategy it is a catalyst for change.
In the face of global education challenges, especially in underserved regions, we must prioritise what truly makes the difference: empowering teachers. Because in every classroom, regardless of location or resources, it is the teacher who holds the greatest potential to transform lives.
